The Pot of Cell Phone Calls Has Been Fulfilled!

The number of lately registered mobile calls made a real splash! It is the first time when cell phone calls have considerably fallen, according to new research.

JD Power is carrying surveys for tens years, and this is the first time the number of calls has fallen in the passed decade. The actual research shows that the average number of weekly calls made by pre-pay customers has fallen from 14 (2006) to 10 (2007). In other words it is a drop of 28,5 %. In case of plan/contract customers the number has dropped from 35 to 27, which equals to 23%.

Premises to generate calls drop

The experts' analyze showed that there are several premises to determine the number of cell phones to drop. The main ones are as follows:

  1. The novelty of constantly being in touch gradually fades. People are not as enthusiastic about reaching someone in any par of the world as they were before. Besides, many active and passive users (those who witness the cell phone calls) are tired of constant interruption and the buzz of annoying ring tones.
  2. Alternative ways of communication are rapidly emerging. Text messages and emails supported by newer types of cell phones (though they take more time to be entered down) are gaining popularity. This is because they are cheaper and avoid the sometimes unwilled direct contact with the receiver. There are situations in which it is more likely to solve an issue via an e-mail message than by contacting someone personally.
The industry analysts found that the texts messages average reached 46 a week rising from 32 (contract customers).
  3. People have changed their mentality. The time when people wanted their devices to justify the money spent on them by using it all the time, has long ago passed. The same happened with the people's need to wave them around and make 'look at me' calls. Today it is rather rude to loudly talk in public than a matter of pride.
  4. Growing number of handset thievery. Of course, this is not the main reason people make less calls, but many still avoid to become a target for thieves and muggers by using their handsets in crowded or, on the contrary, desolated places.
  5. Young people loose their interest in cell phone calls. To be more precise the youth divides its interest among various gadgets such as MP3 music players, games consoles, PCs/laptops, PDAs, etc. Besides, most of the youngsters would rather replace calls with chat.
  6. Latest handsets performance. Many of the cutting edge cell phones have a lot of high-end functions such as mobile television, music, videos, pdcasting, etc. So that their owners have little time to make calls.

Cell phone bills have decreased once the mobile call volumes have fallen. This year it was registered a drop of 36 % (per-pay consumers) and 20% (contract consumers). So, in order to get an appropriate revenue, mobile telephony providers are oriented towards providing newest functions and utilities. The most important directions are: cost, network coverage, image, offerings and promotions, range of handsets and customer service.

The above research, was actually based on a survey of more than 2,000 people of different ages, gender, and social status. The results proved that many users switched to alternative silent ways of communication ( text messages and e-mails). Also, the majority where interested in spending time on digesting the latest features of their devices instead of placing expensive and useless calls.

What would you choose to do with your handset instead of making calls?
