What Can Convince You to Leave Your Laptop at Home on Vacation?

Vacation time comes with fast steps and you think about having a good holiday time and still get some job matters done by taking your laptop with you. Knowing people will tell you "Go ahead if you want to ruin your holidays!" And they would be perfectly right.

Once you have got your long-hoped-for trip, then use it for relaxation, entertainment and leisure. Your trusty laptop can spoil your vacation only by the fact that you'll think -- 'it is somewhere out there waiting for me'. So far so good, but you'll try to find some excuses to still bring laptop with you, such as -- 'I need it for mobility, and I need my e-mail checked, and I want to stay in touch with my family and friends back home'.

When you start packing, you'll see all downsides of traveling with a laptop! Especially if you have planed a trip abroad. Some of them you can read about below:

1. Weight. A laptop with all its accessories weighs about 7lbs and even more. At first, it seams to you it's not too much for a healthy man, but very soon it starts to feel heavy. And what if there is a weight limit on a flight and you have more to carry?

2. Risk of getting robbed. You usually carry your laptop in a special laptop bag, so it can't be mistaken with any other which is for a great help to thieves. A being in use laptop costs about $1000. This is the money for you to loose and for thief to get, if you don't keep an eye on your laptop. And you certainly don't keep an eye on your laptop because you are distracted by children, ticket checking, messages on the panel, etc!

3. Power supply problems. If you go abroad you'll need a different power adapter plug for each country. Besides, you'll get a different power supply which means you'll need a step-up/step-down voltage transformer.

4. Connection issues. Connection to Internet can be an issue as long as you get into a wild area. If your laptop is suitably equipped then it will be easy for you to find a way to get connected. You can use wireless Internet access or you can find a local hotspot, which is again an issue.

Of course, you also have the option of accessing Internet via a dial-up modem, but it's Stone Age! Still you can do the following:

  • Use your ISP's local call number for the certain country you're visiting (your ISP generally has a local number! )
  • Sign up with a local ISP
  • Call your regular dial-up number back home

5. Telephone socket problems. Beside the fact that you might need a power adapter plug, you also might need a suitable telephone adapter plug. That is because different countries have different standards for telephone socket. You'll need it upon connecting via dial-up access.

Also, you need to take into account that your modem can burn up if used with higher-voltage digital telephones lines. The motherboard can be damaged too. To avoid it, you can use a digital signal tester.

6. Extra insurance cover. Travel insurance policy usually doesn't include laptop computers. That is why you'll need to fix a separate one, called specialist insurance cover. The first problem with it is that it isn't cheap and the second one is that it take some time to make it work.

7. For God sake – your are on vacation! Do you really want to feel like your office has accompanied you on your vacation? In case you still want to take your laptop with you on a trip, then you need to have very serious reasons.

Still, if you have the gut not to bring it with you all around, then be sure – there always is the alternative of using an Internet Cafe!

Though they are rare, still almost every city has several Internet cafes! Airports, railway stations, business centers, major hotels, public libraries, and even onboard cruise ships – all have Internet cafes. Now, you can breathe a sigh of relief because everything linked to Internet connection – hardware, connectivity, security – is somebody else's problem!

Take some wise advise and spend a vacation with only your dear leaving the smart device you call laptop AT HOME. It also needs a vacation from you!
