What is Infrared about?

Infrared light is a type of light that cannot be seen by human eye. Some call it 'invisible light'. It brings us certain information about objects that is not available to the naked eye. Any object has its warmth or lacks it, so infrared light offers information about an object's temperature.

Infrared (IR) light was discovered in the yearly 1800 by William Herschel (English astronomer). The invention led to its utilization in imaging and photography fields. Later, it was developed to be used with different technologies for security reasons as well as entertainment.

Infrared (IR) radiation is electromagnetic radiation of a wavelength longer than that of visible light. Still it is shorter than than microwave radiation. The wavelength of Infrared radiation is between 750 nm and 1 mm. It has the ability to span three orders of magnitude.

Infrared technology is widely used for security reasons. Thus, for example, infrared cameras are installed in different places to protect the owners. The cameras show the image of a warm object. Different temperatures are represented by different colors. The warmer an object is the brighter the colors are. Infrared enabled devices can capture car engine's heat, human or animal warmth, or any other kind of heat.

These type of cameras are usually used to assure a better night vision. They are mounted as security cameras in any house, office, and even police or military forces objects. They prevent against robberies and crimes.

Infrared cameras are also used by satellites in space. They have the ability to measure the temperature of the oceans, to detect volcano, to study the Earth's weather and even to detect the infrared light from outer space. The strong spot about this type of camera is that they can do all of the above day and night.

Infrared cameras are also used by firefighters in finding and rescuing people and animals. This is possible due to the fact that infrared cameras can go through thick smoke, fog, etc. Airplanes use infrared cameras to land in foggy weather.

Some infrared cameras are configured to work only when they are triggered. Usually they have a built-in sensor designed to catch heat. This means that such cameras will automatically turn on and start capturing the view when any kind of heat detected.

Camera systems may automatically turn on alarm system, wake you up or call special services.
